A few times I’ve talk with my dear friend Rebeca about people’s profiles and activities on Facebook. In our discussions we have shared something in common: we don’t know what to believe from people’s profiles on Facebook.
I had the experience of being at a gathering with a few people and while the purpose of our get together was to catch up and spend some time together, there they are on their phones connected through Facebook, not talking to anybody, not laughing, not making jokes or sharing their most recent experiences. It’s just a couple of people staring at their phones like they are possessed by their phones.
Later on, I go into this famous site and I see that my friends have uploaded photos of drinks, staged photos laughing and posted status saying things such as “Having the best time of my life”, when in reality I was bored to death and all they did was spend all night on their phones not even aware of their surroundings, the music, the people, etc.
What is this? What’s happened to people? Why can’t people have real conversations anymore or actually enjoy their environment?
I have no idea! Why do people feel that they should fake their life and impress others instead of actually enjoying life? Well, I don’t know, but my distinguish friend says everything I feel on the next statement:
“I love how people have time to change their Facebook profile picture and cover photo 10 times a day, post 100 quotes, check in even when they’re sitting on the toilet, like every post they see, comment on everybody’s post, status and photos and change their Facebook status a hundred times a day and they are sooo busy that they don’t have time to have a real conversation with friends and family….And in the meantime their connections with people in real life are disappearing because their social life has become a social media life.
I’m pretty sure Facebook was not created to replace reality, but to stay in touch with people who you may not have direct and constant access to. It’s also hilarious how some people appear so cool, fun, nice, accomplished and so put together on Facebook and when you meet them in person, they have no social skills, no personality whatsoever and are not as realized as they seem on Facebook. Maybe the people who don’t need to reveal every single detail of their lives to the world are the really accomplished and fulfilled ones, because they spend more time enjoying their lives than telling people they do. And it’s called a timeline, not a diary.
I don’t have a problem with Facebook or using Facebook.
I, myself use it, not as frequently as most people who feel like they have to share everything they do from the moment they open their eyes until they go to bed, or share even the most intimate details of their lives.
What makes me sad is that some people have replaced reality with Facebook. They have stopped enjoying their friends, family, relationships, places, food, drinks, people, music and surroundings because all they do is post pictures, status, and check their Facebook every 5 minutes. From the perspective of a person who actually takes life by the horns, reality is so much better than life on Facebook. Actually talking to your friends and family, dancing, enjoying delicious meals, listening to music and taking life in is so much more fulfilling. Life is short and you should spend more time enjoying life than talking about it.
Every minute you waste on your phone and Facebook is a minute you will never get back.
